On October 19th, 2005, Colombia's National Television Commission (CNTV) issued Agreement (Acuerdo) No. 004 by means of which it banned television advertising (direct, indirect or promotional) for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products. The ban implementation is phased in over 2006, as follows: (i) Until April 30th, 2006, ads for alcohol and tobacco will be allowed only on broadcasts of sporting and cultural events that are aired on TV outside the hours set aside for children viewing. (ii) From May until the end of November 2006, tobacco and alcohol companies will be acknowledged at the beginning and end of the programs concerned, but the products or brands will not be mentioned or shown. (iii) The total ban in the country on “any kind of television advertising or reference to cigarettes, tobacco, or beverages with alcoholic content” will take effect December 01, 2006 without any exception. This new measure applies to all TV platforms (satellite, terrestrial and cable), profit or non-profit, with any kind of coverage (national, regional, local and zonal).
